Mandarins are the most colourful birds I have ever seen.  As with people, the mandarins have different head shapes and different proportions, but at the end of the day they all get a fair swatch of purple, blue, green, orange, maroon and topped off with pink beaks.

To give their colours are “full blast” I find it best to photograph them on dull days. The distraction of other colours is downgraded to a pure silver in the water. Once again I visualise that Mr Mandarin is in deep thought as he stands on the log looking out onto the grey water.

A fancy word for the day is ‘deportment’ – which is a way a person stands or walks and is linked to ‘posture’. This photo speaks to me of ‘quiet elegance’ and an air of grace or contemplation.
