The heron is a canny bird. It can sense danger and when observers are in close proximity. To get a close photo of a heron takes time and effort and persistence. As books say – approach a bird as if not caring that it is there. The less eye contact the better.
I followed this approach in this photo and got significantly closer than ever to this weird and wonderful bird. The distance from camera to bird was only about three metres. To see his plumage and his beak and his eye was a very interesting moment in my days as a wildlife photographer.
